The Landlord - 35MM | Bill Gunn at Roxy!

Written by visionary black filmmaker Bill Gunn and the first film of Oscar-winning director Hal Ashby, The Landlord is both a coming-of-age tale and a social satire. When wealthy, white Elger Winthrop Enders buys a tenement brownstone in pre-gentrified Park Slope Brooklyn, he plans to evict its predominantly Black residents. Instead, he becomes entangled in the lives of his tenants.

“Liberal guilt, with a few good laughs, a lot of frantic activity, and the occasional backfire.”
– Dave Kehr

“One of the funniest social comedies of the period, as well as the most human.”
– J. Hoberman, The Village Voice
