Nosferatu + Live Score by the Andrew Alden Ensemble
The vampire film that started them all gets its shadow back. The Andrew Alden Ensemble performs an original score live beneath F.W. Murnau’s 1922 landmark — the New York chamber group whose violin, cello, keys, drums, and voice sit somewhere between contemporary classical and rock, writing music built for the room rather than the recording booth: immediate, physical, and made for this film alone. On screen, Count Orlok (Max Schreck) uncoils out of the Carpathians — all talons and teeth and rat-borne plague — and crosses the sea toward a town that cannot wake from him. A hundred years later the images still crawl.
A Q&A with composer Andrew Alden will follow, with an informal reception afterward at the bar!
The Andrew Alden Ensemble is a New York-based chamber group that performs original scores live alongside classic films. They’ve sold out art houses and movie theaters across New England, New York, and the Midwest; the executive director of Images Cinema in Williamstown called their October 2024 Nosferatu “the most successful live event the theater had produced.” More at https://www.andrewaldenensemble.com/.
