Psycho-Fiction: The Surreal Nightmares of Screaming Mad George
The series curator’s dark horse pick for must-see movie in the Screaming Mad George retrospective, the late entry from the direct-to-video years of the long, byzantine Christmas series is shockingly entertaining. The story involves a young boy who is traumatized when bizarre mystery toys kill people including his deadbeat father, his school bully, and a landlord (yes!) in strange and gruesome ways. This puts him in touch with a toy seller named Joe Petto—owner of “Petto’s Toys” (say it out loud)—played by a typically unhinged late-career Mickey Rooney. And from there, the story takes a twist into being a… Terminator knock-off? To the best of our knowledge, Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker has never screened theatrically in New York City on 35mm.
