THE SOURCE FAMILY
Q&A with ISIS AND GALAXY AQUARIAN AND JODI WILLE
Roxy Cinema, Museum of Sex and Sacred Bones Records present a special screening of the THE SOURCE FAMILY in honor of the new Museum of Sex exhibition Utopia: Three Centuries of Sexuality in American Cults and Communes. Featuring a conversation with Source Family members Isis and Galaxy Aquarian and director/curator Jodi Wille and book signings with Isis (FAMILY: The Source Family Scrapbook, Sacred Bones, 2023) and Galaxy (aka Dawn Hurwitz, Psychedelic Wild Child, 2023). This is the first NYC screening of THE SOURCE FAMILY in 13 years.
THE SOURCE FAMILY (2012, 98 min, dirs. Jodi Wille and Maria Demopoulos) documents the eponymous 1970s Hollywood utopian commune founded by charismatic leader and health food restaurateur Father Yod (James Edward Baker). The Source Family’s outlandish style, popular vegetarian restaurant, rock band, and striking devotees made them darlings of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, but their outsider ideals sparked controversy and led to a dramatic unraveling. This true story is told by the members themselves through extensive home movies, photographs, documents, and interviews.
