The Red Violin + Live Performance | Instruments of Desire

Following the success of 1993’s Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould, director François Girard and co-writer Don McKellar reunited to tell the story of The Red Violin, tracing the titular instrument’s journey from its creation in 17th-century Italy to an auction in 1990s Montreal–and the various musicians and owners it bewitches along the way. Girard mounts a handsome production with location shooting across five countries, from China to Austria, and Samuel L. Jackson shines as Charles Morritz, a fussy instrument appraiser who falls under the violin’s spell while decoding its secrets. Composer John Corigliano won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and violinist Joshua Bell performed all of the solos in the film.
