The Red Violin follows the titular instrument from its creation in 17th-century Italy to 1990s Montreal—bewitching various musicians and owners along the way. Director Fracoise Girard mounts a handsome production with impressive location shooting from China to Vienna, and Jackson shines as Charles Morritz, a fussy instrument appraiser who falls under the violin’s spell as it heads to auction. Composer John Corigliano won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and violinist Joshua Bell performed all of the solos in the film.

Screening to open with a performance of film composer John Corigliano’s The Red Violin Caprices by Chili Ekman.

Curated by Kamron Saniee and Emilie Meyer for Instruments of Desire.
