Q&A with filmmaker Kayla Dawn Marcus moderated by Special Guest
It’s the new millennium and puritanical Brenda is quickly realizing that she isn’t going to experience a true, life changing, profound love in her current relationship. Her boyfriend Gerald begs to differ. As Brenda attempts to escape the clutches of her clingy betrothed, she steps out and submits a video to a dating website. Through this matchmaking service she discovers Russell, an attractive and charming man with whom she becomes instantly infatuated. They are set up on a date and Russell calls Brenda to verify. Brenda is overcome with anticipation and delight, she feels as though Russell could be “the one”. When he stands her up, she breaks down, but Russell re-appears beneath her window, just not with the typical romantic gesture. He pleasures himself to an unknowing Brenda from afar. She catches him but rather than repulsion, she’s filled with intrigue, receiving attention from her crush in any form has sparked a new attitude in Brenda. As her confidence rises and her sexual fantasies reach new heights, she gains the courage to profess her love for Russell, confront her boyfriend and leave the old Brenda behind. Through these actions she discovers the knowledge and power she needed all along to fortify her credence… in herself.

The Downtown Festival is a celebration of emerging and established independent artists across film, music, art, and culture in New York City. The festival’s film program runs October 10–18, with premieres & anniversary screenings at Roxy Cinema, and additional events, including live music, artist talks, and special programs, taking place at venues across Lower Manhattan.
