As part of the ongoing Roxy Cinema series examining Dorothy Stratten’s cultural legacy and the construction of women within the image economy, Alissa Bennett and Gabrielle Richardson reflect on the conditions and constraints of agency within this system today. Both have a unique breadth of experiences as models whose image circulates publicly and in the commercial gallery system directing how the visual work of others is presented. 

Moving through subjects that span mythology, vulnerability, eroticism, ambition, and self-invention, the discussion considers how women’s identities are shaped, consumed, and rewritten through media culture. The conversation accompanies screenings from the series and expands on themes explored in Cristine Brache’s new essay on Dorothy Stratten published in The Whitney Review of New Writing.
